Student Do’s & Don’ts

Do fill out (or renew) your FAFSA or CA Dream Act App.

  • Complete your application as soon after Oct. 1 as possible, and no later than March 2 for the fall semester of the coming year.

  • Use your prior year tax returns.

  • Create a FSA ID for yourself and your parents when you first fill out your FAFSA.

  • Keep your and your parent’s ID’s and passwords in a safe place where you can quickly find them.

Do try to be a full time student, carrying 12 semester units or more each semester.

This will make you eligible for additional financial aid and for a wide range of special services that are not available to part time students.

Do enroll in Transferrable Math and English courses that include Co-Requisite Support courses.

Do sign up for the “First Year Experience Program” for students attending community college for the first time.

Follow the requirements for enrollment be aware of the application deadlines.

Do enroll in all community college programs that provide priority registration and specialized counseling. 

Do meet with an academic counselor.

Be sure to obtain an official educational plan and update the plan each semester.

Do read your course syllabus.

Be careful to look for activities that must be completed online.

Do meet with your professor at least 3 times during the semester.

Do not be afraid to ask questions and/or how you can improve your grade in the class.

Do use Rate My Professor.

Use the website to help choose the best instructors for the classes you want to take.

Do p

lan a minimum of 2 hours of study for every 1 hour in class.

If you are weak in a subject, more study time will be required.

Do maintain the highest G.P.A. possible. 

Most popular and impacted university majors require 3.0 G.P.A. or higher for acceptance.

Student Don’ts

  • Do not fail to do all of the DO’s above!

  • Do not ever drop or add a class without talking to a counselor or your mentor first.

  • Do not ever give up if a class that you want is closed.  Instead talk to a counselor or your mentor.

  • Do not ever give up on college in general without talking to a college counselor or your mentor first.
